On the Wings of Learning: A feather comes alive in this tale and teaches kids about history and language

CENTENNIAL, Wyo., Nov. 6, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Feather, the fluffy, fuzzy feather adorning a bald eagle can talk, see, think and feel. In fact, Feather is an invincible, female feather traveling and living through the centuries up to modern day in the fun, learning book "A Legendary Feather and Her Tale" (now available through 1stBooks Library) by Donna H.B. Smith.

Smith designed this educational book in an adventurous way to motivate kids to get interested in both of the subjects, English and History. This 12-chapter book captures the heart of dreamy juveniles with its fantasy and fable approaches. Young readers are asked for the definition of a word, the meaning of allegory and for alliteration before they can progress to the next chapter. More than an exciting reference and interactive piece, it also serves as a coloring book of interesting pictures.

"A Legendary Feather" not only catches the fancy of its young readers, it inspires them to think like grown-ups. A group of kids can debate on the interesting traits and motives of the main character, Feather. Feedback from fifth and sixth graders of Cheyenne, Laramie and Centennial, Montana was used in testing this book.

Donna Smith, who graduated with B.A. in Journalism from the University of Colorado in Boulder, previously worked for The Boulder Daily Camera, the Cheyenne Newspapers, Inc, and Laramie Boomerang. She taught journalism, public relations and advertising copywriting classes at the University of Wyoming. When she opened her own advertising firm, Donna Smith & Associates in 1982, she conducted workshops for different business and media entities.

In Cheyenne, she produced and hosted daily radio talk shows and a weekly television public affairs show. Concurrently, she wrote a weekly, humorous, slice-of-life column for The Wyoming Tribune-Eagle. Both of the Smiths are now retired and live at the base of the Snowy Range outside of Centennial, Wyoming. They have three grown children and they are all avid outdoor enthusiasts. Donna says she focuses on fiction writing in her "spare time."
