Agent 008: New Novel Presents a 70s Spy Game

TILLSONBURG, Ontario, Nov. 7, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- In "Ramases Spoke" (now available through 1stbooks Library), John Woods take us back to the era of the glittering 70s, when the Cold War was still raging, and when every move by the Superpowers threatened the world's peaceful existence.

The protagonist, Bob McLean, is a British journalist who becomes enmeshed in a deadly power struggle between conflicting forces. The action starts when he uncovers a sinister plot formed by a small military force to invade North America by way of Canada. Along the way, he is recruited into the CIA, which orders him to continue with his investigation. Two other CIA agents, Foster and Natasha, join the fray. It is McLean's burning ambition to get the biggest scoop of his career which sustains the group as they undergo a journey that takes them from East Berlin to the plains of Siberia, where Chinese links to the conspiracy are unraveled.

Bob and Natasha proceed to the Portuguese enclave of Macau, where the rebel factions behind the plot are based. The three CIA agents are eventually captured. In prison, to their utter disbelief, they discover Mao Tse-tung alive and breathing. Their surprise proves short-lived as Mao is subsequently murdered. The ensuing discord results in the mastermind's dissolution of the invasion plans. McLean finally gets home but without the journalistic scoop he had been hankering for.

"Ramases Spoke" provides a refreshing twist to the otherwise tired cloak and dagger theme frequently used in espionage novels set in the Cold War Period. This book is an engrossing tour de force suited to those who want to hone their Sherlock Holmesian skills and James Bond-like moves.

Author John Woods was born in Coventry, England in the pre-war era. His first job was with the Merchant Navy. He went on to work as an electrician while raising his own family. In the latter part of his career, Woods became a correctional officer. Now a widower, he lives alone with his border collie and plays golf for recreation.
