Escaping to Freedom -- German Survivor Recounts Her Flight to Freedom from Russian Soldiers in 1945

DONNA, Texas, Nov. 14, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- "When I awoke on the morning of April 22, 1945, I was a bundle of apprehension. I felt overwhelming sorrow at the prospect of leaving my family behind in Berlin, for I wondered how they could possibly survive." So begins the true story of Brunhild Rajaniemi and her narrow escape from Berlin before the Russians invaded.

"Two Escaping the Last Battle" (available from 1stBooks Library) is Rajaniemi's memoir of a frightening and remarkable escape from the darkness threatening to take her very soul. The story of two Berliner girls who escaped just in time to avoid the cruelty and brutal rapes being handed out mercilessly by the Russian Soldiers, "Two Escaping the Last Battle" will have your heart pounding until its final page.

As Rajaniemi and her friend Margit escape their hometown, Rajaniemi recounts their dangerous surroundings, their wit, ingenuity, laughs, loves and disappointments. As they left their hometown behind, Rajaniemi remembers thinking, "I was on my way, never to return to my home. Never to return to the place where I grew up, and where I spent my youth."

The dialogue of this brilliant first novel is dispersed with a German accent, and is as close to the native speech as the author could get and still write in the slightly more accessible English.

Brunhild Rajaniemi was born and raised in Berlin. She was trained and worked at radar, receiving and announcing advancing aircraft during WWII. She endured bombings and hunger blockades and watched the Airlift when American planes brought food to Berlin. She left Germany in April of 1962 and headed for America. Once arriving in the States, she worked as an annalyst, model maker, keypunch operator, secretary and data controller. She gave lessons in garment pattern drafting and dress designing and designed a foot warmer for which she received a patent.

Rajaniemi currently lives in Donna, Texas with her husband, Ray.
