Nokia proves live multimedia messaging interoperability between CDMA and GSM networks at COMDEX Fall

Nokia (NYSE: NOK), the leading supplier of Multimedia Messaging (MMS) device and infrastructure solutions, will present a live Multimedia Messaging exchange across CDMA and GSM networks at COMDEX Fall. The presentation will mark the first Multimedia Message transmission between a CDMA and GSM carrier network using commercially available technology. This demonstrates Nokia’s commitment to supply its MMS solution with viable and fully integrated multimedia services to both GSM and CDMA carriers.

Person-to-person MMS allows subscribers to send and receive messages combining text, images, graphics and sound in a single integrated message.

"Nokia's presentation of live MMS interoperability underscores our support for new mobile services and is another benchmark in our extensive track record in implementing open standards," said Bill Plummer, vice president of strategy for Nokia Americas.

"This milestone in MMS interoperability proves to the industry that wireless technology interoperability is possible and that it will deliver significant benefits to all entities. Standards and interoperability are fundamental for enabling the best possible user experience with multimedia. This is a great example of our commitment to enabling that positive personal experience in both CDMA and GSM networks."

Nokia, the expert in mobility, supports MMS with a complete end-to-end solution for deployment that includes mobile network infrastructure, mobile terminals, content and service development tools and applications. The Nokia Multimedia Messaging Service Centre (MMSC) provides content storage, adaptation and forwarding. The Multimedia Terminal Gateway enables Multimedia Messages to be sent between MMS-capable devices and legacy phones. Additionally, the Nokia MMS solution provides intelligent connectivity to e-mail and rich push/pull applications among other services. Nokia's MMS solution is available for both CDMA and GSM/GPRS networks. The Nokia MMS solution is best demonstrated with advanced imaging handsets, such as the recently announced Nokia 3650.

The Nokia MMS solution is based on open standards defined by the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) and 3GPP industry fora.

At COMDEX Fall Nokia and other leading companies in the wireless industry will also showcase the benefits of MMS interoperability between server solutions and handsets by different manufacturers. The multi-vendor interoperability will accelerate the delivery of compatible MMS services to wireless subscribers and generate revenue for carriers. All companies participating in the MMS Interoperability live presentation are members of the OMA and adhere to open MMS specifications created by OMA.

Media and analysts are welcome to visit the Nokia booth (North Hall, Booth 3208) or the Multivendor MMS Interoperability Suite at Room N216 (second level, Las Vegas Convention Center's North Hall), open Monday through Friday during COMDEX Fall exhibition hours.
