`Nursing Home Horrors' -- The Dirty Truth Behind Elderly Healthcare

HAMPTON, Va., Nov. 25, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- In many cultures of the world, the elderly are revered as invaluable founts of wisdom and experience; sources to be turned to for advice, stories and a sense of history. Unfortunately, this is not so in today's society. Christine Nicole Bowman, R.N., knows firsthand this truth. Her book, "Nursing Home Horrors" (now available through 1stBooks Library), paints a gruesome picture of a culture lost to its past and in danger of destroying those who lived it.

Today, youth and beauty are the idols of worship. The old and infirm are all too often pushed aside and forgotten, tucked quietly into nursing homes to wait for death. Forgotten in nursing homes are many of our nation's elderly and chronically ill who are subject to horrible abuse and neglect at the hands of those entrusted with their care.

Bowman, a registered nurse who dreamed of a career caring for the elderly, was shocked and horrified by the squalid conditions and abuse she encountered in the nursing homes of her native state of Virginia (although these problems are not exclusive to that state alone). She showed just how much one person can do to alter the status quo drastically by banding together with friend and fellow nurse Lynn Bridges to effect dramatic improvements in two Virginia nursing homes. Truly an inspiration story of perseverance and inner strength, "Nursing Home Horrors" is intended to awaken and infuriate the public.

Christine Nicole Bowman is a registered nurse who held the position of Director of Nursing with a private nursing home. Although a native of Wilmington, N.C., she has resided in Hampton, Va., with her husband and grown son for many years. Ms. Bowman is a staunch proponent of patients' rights and has contributed countless hours advocating improvements in nursing homes and related institutions and continues to fight for decent and responsible healthcare.
