The Pleasant Shock of Struggle -- New Collection of Poems Resonates with Wisdom

MARIETTA, Ga., Dec. 4, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- Shannon M. Grier's stirring collection of poems, "The Gate" (now available through 1stBooks Library), resonates with wisdom derived from experiences familiar to many. Grier draws inspiration from the rich tapestry of her own life. She weaves the many scraps of verses she wrote over the years into poems that articulate extraordinary lessons amid the humdrum of everyday life.

"'The Gate' is an embodiment of the struggles undergone by many," Grier says. Her verses tap into the reader's deep-seated longings and eventually open a gateway to some of the answers that could lead to happiness and contentment.

In the poem "Are you one of my kind" for instance, Grier attempts to shatter the sense of isolation and alienation that afflicts people. "Are you lonely/afraid to be/Can't speak/ talk to me/ are you one of my kind. Highs are lows/lows are highs/are you really one of a kind."

Grier's poetry aspires to be an intimate conversation with disaffected souls. It honors the strengths of the human character and pays tribute to the liberation of the human spirit. Grier speaks to her generation but she touches on themes that are ageless and encompassing.

Grier was born in Georgia. She grew up in different environments, attending schools in Georgia, Tennessee, and Quebec. Music of various forms influences her poetry. As a writer, she has ironically found stability in solitude. She lives in Marietta, Ga.
