The `Inner Light' and the Meaning of Life -- Author Sheds Light on Human Experience

WESTHAMPTON, Mass., January 14, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- The world is not as it appears. The far-out, the impossible, even the foolish, can be more real and more true than all the logical, measurable, reality-based beliefs our culture holds in such reverence, according to Bernard Fleury. If we care anything about truth, we should not limit the universe solely to what we perceive with our five senses. There are other truths that are not verifiable and quantifiable but are definitely experienced. Meant for anyone who has ever wondered about his personal experience of light, Fleury's "Called Into Life by the Light" (now available through 1stBooks Library), is a non-fiction account of the human experience of "light" in theology, philosophy, physics, medicine and near-death experience.

"Called Into Life by the Light" enumerates how meaningful and how useful light is to mankind and to civilization. It is a powerful source of healing, an ingredient to good health and proper functioning of body muscles and nerves, and, in the form of electricity, powers much of our industrial enterprise; it illuminates people's homes and entertains people with television. Simply put, man's life is unthinkable without the physical, outer light.

However, in the book, it is stressed that the outer light is not the only form of light that has meaning to human life. Here, the concept on the "inner light" is introduced. It says, "the inner light is the most basic of the two lights (inner and outer) because it enables us to decipher, make sense out of, comprehend the outer light."

In a similar vein, Arthur Zajonc writes in "Catching the Light," "without an inner light, without a formative visual imagination, we are blind." In addition, it underscores the notion that "light is the foundation stone of meaning; it is the key to conceptualizing, making sense out of our entire inner and outer experience; an elusive, pervasive something and someone calling each of us into life."

None of the other books on covering the same subject focus on light in the comprehensive approach that Fleury's book does. This is truly a valuable self-help, self-understanding resource for everyone interested in the metaphysical aspects of man's existence in this world.

Bernard J. Fleury holds a B.A. in history and classical languages and an Ed.D. in philosophy, government and administration. He is also a former English and Latin teacher and school principal. He is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Educational Administration. Fleury currently resides in Westhampton, Mass., with his wife and grandson.
