`Silent Tears' -- The remarkable story of one brave young woman's search for inner peace

ANTLERS, Okla., January 16, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- "Silent Tears" (now available through 1stBook Library), by Evelene Steel, is about growing up in the 1920s and '30s. The characters are based on life as it was: difficult and painful times for the men and women who labored to provide the essential needs of their families.

This is a story of the rape and abuse of a woman which has never been published in newspapers or told before. It may bring joy, laughter or tears. Evelene Steele went through many problems. In the first half of the 30s, Oklahoma lost around 30,000 farmers; so devastating, it inspired Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath." Families left in their old T-models, with some of their goods tied on top of the car. Steele's family was among this group who left the state and lost their home during those hard times.

At a very young age, she met a young man who eventually seduced her. Considered a common tramp by her own husband, she found herself with a wild reputation and an angry father who preached the word of God straight from the Bible. Being misunderstood by her father forced her to marry another abusive man.

This marriage led to the birth of a beautiful baby girl, Misty. One night her husband came home drunk; Steele knew what was coming next. She picked up her baby and ran into the forest for safety.

She was later brought to court by her father-in-law who claimed she was an unfit mother. He wanted to take Misty from her, but she won that battle.

This story overflows with real-life happenings. Mary is in fact real, and her problems were real. But in the end she overcomes her problems to help others and find happiness.

Raised in the Kiamichi Mountains of Oklahoma in the '20s and '30s, Evelene Steele had a speech problem as a child, which caused shyness; the woods became her companion.

Growing up, she felt her needs were always wrong. She searched for something to fill her heart. Though the search caused her great pain, in the end, she overcame them to help others find happiness.
