`Saying It Right' -- New book offers common sense for the wayward tongue

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C., January 16, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- After we become adults, our manner of speaking is more or less fixed; we do not expect to have our words corrected -- that is, unless we have siblings, according to Madge Myers Canter who has taken steps to ensure you have a handy reference to guide your wayward tongue, siblings or not. Her talents can be found in the form of non-academic essays in her book "Saying It Right" (now available through 1stBooks Library).

Brothers and sisters seem to feel free at any age to pounce on one another's grammar. The rest of us receive little if any instruction. Even our good friends refrain from offering help, fearing to hurt our feelings. So how can we grown-ups know how good our speech is, or how bad?

That's exactly where this little book comes in. From the wise words of a woman who's lived through lingo fads over the last 80 years comes the gentle reminder to us all: respect language. Her knowledge is easily accessible in this short collection and highly appreciated in an age where technology has almost erased the necessity to speak well, and at times, even the need to speak to each other.

Madge Myers Canter was born in l913 in Sharpsburg, North Carolina to the reverend Charlie Myers and Addie Martin Myers. In l934, she received an A.B. degree from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. A teaching career followed, with positions in Brunswick, Rutherford and Anson counties. During various summer vacations she took courses at Appalachian State University, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Duke University.

In l947, she married Claude Canter of North Wilkesboro. During the l960s and early '70s she taught English and Spanish at East Wilkes High School. In retirement she lives in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. In creating this "language aid for adults," she was assisted on the computer by her daughter, Claudia Marie Canter.
