The Color of Courage -- Book Reveals An African family's Road to Emancipation

PLAINFIELD, Ill., January 16, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- "Lizzie's Story: A Slave Family's Journey to Freedom" (now available at 1stBooks Library) is a story of one family's continuing faith in themselves and in God. Although some of the names in this book were culled from the imagination of the author, Clarice Boswell pieces together a story that is true in its setting and period in history.

"Lizzie's Story" is a treatise on an African family that arrived in America from West Africa on a slave merchant ship in the spring of 1850. Upon embarking in Maryland, they were placed in a holding stockade in Annapolis. It was among the smallest auction markets for slaves destined for the states of Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama. The family, consisting of the parents and two children, survived the three-month voyage across the Atlantic only to be sold to the highest bidder. Slaves who were purchased for Kentucky plantations made an overland trip on foot across the mountains to reach their destination. At night, they would often sleep in churches, jails or warehouses. Lizzie's family is a testament to utmost patience and sheer will, qualities which helped them to ultimately achieve freedom.

Boswell has crafted an inspiring portrayal of a slave family in "Lizzie's Story." In creating the background of the story, she drew on much of the first-person dialogue to describe actual accounts of events that the family encountered upon arriving in 1850. The story focuses on their daily struggle, while seeking ways to be free. The author sharply describes the trials and tribulations of a family living in servitude, exerting much effort to stay together through the most difficult times in America.

Clarice Boswell attended Kentucky State College, a land-grant, historically black college, where she received a degree in nutrition and home economics education. She earned a master's and doctorate degree at Northern Illinois University. Boswell resides with her family in Plainfield, Ill.
