``Surviving World War II...'', the fascinating true story of a Child Swamp Hermit in the Philippines

CAPE CORAL, Fla., January 23, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- "Surviving World War II As A Child Swamp Hermit: Transcending Illiteracy and Ignorance" by Sal Kapunan (now available through 1stBooks Library) is about the survival of a ten-year old boy in a swamp in the Philippines, which lasted for three years. He thought that his father had forcibly abandoned him to live alone as the runt of nine siblings.

As a survival strategy, he developed a naturalistic philosophy to blend with the environment and the natural cycles of the universe. He transcended his obstacles, extreme isolation and loneliness. He transformed his life by forming a natural community that consisted of trees, birds, fishes, shells and barnacles. He gave them names and personalities and became at home and comfortable with his surroundings.

His extreme isolation, however, led to illiteracy. He failed all his subjects. He became desperate and attempted suicide by drowning. A didactic dream came to his rescue. The dream told him how to teach himself literacy.

He became literate and pulled himself from the bottom to the top of the class. He won scholarships to prestigious institutions, where he acquired a bachelor's, master's and Ph.D. in philosophy. He also obtained a doctorate in education in the USA. He taught both philosophy and education in various colleges and universities.

Sal Kapunan is a published author of a popular book, "My Taoist Vision of Art." The book has been used as a reader in both art and religion departments in various colleges and some high schools.

He holds a doctorate in philosophy and in education and he had taught in both fields for over twenty years. In recent years, Kapunan has devoted his time to real estate investments and to art especially in sculpture, mosaics and collages. He also writes non-fiction and poetry. His primary hobby, however is gardening.

He lives with his wife, Ruthe, in Cape Coral, Florida during winter and in Boone, North Carolina, in summer. They have three children and two grandchildren.
