Pointsec Mobile Technologies Listed as 'Leader' in Major Industry Research Study

Magic Quadrant Lists Pointsec as a "Leader"

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Jan. 28, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Protect Data (Other OTC:PRTDF) (Stockholm:PROT):

Pointsec Mobile Technologies, a global leader in enterprise security software for laptops, desktops, and PDAs, today announced that its core technology has, for the second year in a row, been placed in the "Leader" quadrant in a major mobile data protection product study released last month by industry research firm Gartner, Inc.

Gartner's Magic Quadrant Mobile Data Protection study is a qualitative evaluation of data protection vendors that offer remote management and recovery techniques for protected data. According to the study's definition, "Leaders," the upper right quadrant, are "vendors who are performing well today, have a clear vision of market direction and are actively building competencies to sustain their leadership position in the market."

"Pointsec is pleased to have its technology affirmed in the marketplace. This respected study will assist the decisions of many enterprises as they weigh the benefits of various data protection technologies," said Peter Larsson, President of Pointsec Mobile Technologies AB. "We believe our products, including Pointsec(R) for PC, Pointsec(R) for Palm OS(R), and Pointsec(R) for Pocket PC, have achieved a strong degree of success due to their responsiveness to customer needs."

Pointsec(R) for PC, the company's flagship product, empowers an enterprise to securely use its mobile devices through scalable, centralized administration of disk encryption as well as flexible mandatory access control. Pointsec(R) for PC offers comprehensive Virtual Physical Security (VPS) that protects information stored on the device regardless of its actual physical location.

Pointsec(R) for PC enhances the security of any PC through its use of whole disk encryption and mandatory access control. Since all data and the operating system are protected, Pointsec(R) for PC prevents the operating system -- the most common point of attack -- from being compromised. Pointsec(R) for PC is installed on the PC's hard disk, providing protection regardless of the location of the PC or its disk.

Pointsec(R) for Pocket PC is a comprehensive security solution that also offers enforceable mandatory access control, full-data encryption, and remote, centralized administrative capability. The solution features the fast and secure AES algorithm, and can encrypt all removable media including MicroDrives, MultiMedia Cards (MMC), Secure Digital (SD) cards, and Compact Flash (CF) cards. In addition, it offers patent pending exclusive PicturePIN(TM) and QuickPIN(TM) authentication, replacing traditional alphanumeric login passwords with a picture-based login code that is easy to remember, yet difficult for others to break.

Gartner's Magic Quadrant study of Mobile Data Protection evaluated 13 vendors according to two major classes of criteria-Ability to Execute and Completeness of Vision. Ability to Execute is determined by measuring the vendor's capabilities in market awareness generation, sales channel effectiveness, system management and configuration, and growth in its installed base. Completeness of Vision, a long-range metric, includes analysis of the vendor's ability to influence industry direction, the range of operating systems and platforms its products can protect, the breadth of its product suite, and the strength of available encryption algorithms.

The Magic Quadrant is Gartner, Inc.'s opinion and is an analytical representation of a marketplace at and for a specific time period. It measures vendors against Gartner defined criteria for a marketplace. The positioning of vendors within a Magic Quadrant is based on the complex interplay of many factors. Gartner does not advise enterprises to select only those firms in the "Leaders" quadrant. In some situations, firms in the Visionary, Challenger, or Niche Player quadrants may be the right matches for an enterprise's requirements. Well-informed vendor selection decisions should rely on more than a Magic Quadrant.
