The Prime Directive -- New Book Details When Therapy Becomes Too Personal

WESTWOOD, N.J., Feb. 3, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Sarah was an amputee-patient of Carolyn, a therapist/counselor. The first five years of their relationship was appropriate, professional and therapeutic. But as the relationship deepens, Sarah's dependence on Carolyn becomes obsessive. Carolyn becomes her drug -- her answer to everything! Its Time To Stop (now available through 1stBooks Library) is a poignant story of a therapeutic relationship that did not adhere to the rules and developed into a dangerous and destructive dependence. The author cautions the reader and those who might possibly become "patients," or therapists, on the pitfalls of letting a therapeutic relationship become personal.

The "void" has always been with Sarah as long as she remembers, the longing, the emptiness, and the need. Then an illness ravaged her. The angry face of Lupus visited her causing the amputation of her right leg. By sheer determination and the will to live a "normal" life, she tried to bury the void. Then she met Carolyn. Carolyn not only had all the answers -- she was the ANSWER!

The book, written in story form, is based upon the real experiences of the author. Ms. McMorrow has witnessed firsthand how inappropriate therapeutic relationships can become, causing damaging results both to patient and healer. It is an interesting case study to read, reflect and respond to. It's Time to Stop can also be used as a tool in not becoming a "victim."

The author, using H. McMorrow as a pen name, has led a quiet simple life in the northern New Jersey suburbs of New York City. Due to a chronic illness, she became very interested in medicine and in spite of the amputation of her leg she has proven to herself and to the world that she is normal. For her being "normal" includes skiing, scuba diving, tennis and hiking. She has a associate's degree in applied sciences and is working on a bachelor's degree in communications. At age 44, she began a new career in medical editing and writing. She is co-developer of PACCE (Providing Amputees Comprehensive Care in their Environment), an innovative program in the field. She began writing this book a year after "that fateful day ... to begin to let go of it." "Facing life's challenges is what makes life interesting. Everyone has his or her own story. Its Time To Stop is mine," said this super-mom of two.
