Trip to Paradise -- New Novel Follows Two Women as the Travel to North America to Begin New Lives

KEY WEST, Fla., Feb. 6, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Set in the United States, Canada and Cuba, Trip to Paradise (now available from 1stBooks Library) is a novel written by an avid traveler, Pheather Johnson.

Johnson writes about two women, Nellanor Doherty Steele and her granddaughter Liz. Nell was brought from Ireland to work as a maid for a rich American family, but soon was raped by the son of a rich neighbor. Pregnant, she was saved from destitution by a young man who proved unable to meet the demands of life. The baby was born, but Nell's husband died.

When Nell's son grew up, he married and had five children. Unfortunately, both he and his wife succumbed to a common disease, tuberculosis. Four of the children were taken from Nell, but she was able to keep Liz.

When she was 21, Liz moves to San Francisco, where she enjoyed a brief love affair. When her lover had to return to Hong Kong, Liz went home to her grandmother for nurturing. They discussed her four siblings, and she went on a search to re-establish bonding.

After traveling to Canada, New York and Mystic, Conn., she decided to move to Key West, Fla. She met Juan Robertson, who romanced her, but he was a secret agent who was preparing to take documents to Cuba. As a newspaper reporter, Liz gradually became aware of strange things happening to her in Cuba. She began to wonder if she was suspected of being a spy. When she returned to Key West, Juan was not the attentive romantic he had been prior to her travels through to Cuba. As Liz prepares to travel to meet her family, she encounters more suprises.
