Living With Anxiety -- New book exposes the hard truth about anxiety disorder

GREENFIELD, Wis., Feb. 13, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Twenty years ago anxiety disorder was not a familiar term. Children, such as Mark Arthur Pagel, grew up dealing with the disorder without medical help or understanding from family and classmates. Pagel's new book, Growing Up with Anxiety Disorder (now available through 1stBooks Library), relives his own experiences in dealing with the illness during grade school, high school, college and adulthood.

One aspect Pagel strongly stresses to readers is that "if you have anxiety disorder, you are not alone." Designed to be an effective tool in understanding and coping with the illness, Pagel's book emphasizes the need for strong communication between parents and children. "Children should feel free to talk with their parents or guardians," he notes.

Since very little has been written about childhood anxiety disorder, Pagel felt an immense need to share his experiences so that those who have it, those who know someone who has it and those who don't understand it can find a truthful, realistic explanation.

Anxiety disorder is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, causing overwhelming anxiety including symptoms such as shaking, nausea and sweating, the author notes. Today the symptoms can be improved by medicine and deep breathing exercises, he adds. Pagel's book is written with the intention of bringing hope.

Pagel is a current resident of Greenfield, Wisconsin. He has a bachelor's degree in English from Marquette University. His hobbies include writing, reading, watching movies, listening to music, golfing and traveling. Growing Up with Anxiety Disorder is Pagel's first published work.
