My Name Is Charley -- New book highlights a family moving past the death of a loved pet and into the paws of another

AMSTERDAM, The Netherlands, Feb. 13, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- When Marjolyn Pols had to put to sleep her family's Great Dane, Ludo, a gap was left they felt could never be replaced. Besides, they were still were in the happy possession of two Siamese cats, one of which, Byou, was of an advanced age; it would have been unwise to spoil her last few years with the presence of a lively puppy. But her new book My Name Is Charley: An Adventurous Welsh Terrier (now available through 1stBooks Library) tells a different side of this sad premise.

In May 1998, however, Byou passed away as well and at that moment the house became a very quiet place. Besides that, Byou's pal Joy was terribly sad and cried for her loss.

Still, the easy life was becoming attractive. No more compulsory outings in the rain. No hurrying home to be in time for the dog's outing. But when the time came, the decision wasn't difficult to make: They had to have a new dog. But, this time, a smaller type would be better. The type Pols calls a 'carry along' dog.

After careful consideration, the choice was made for a French bulldog, notwithstanding the long waiting lists. But a trip to visit friends, provided an agreeable surprise. A Welsh terrier, called Tara, warmly welcomed us and when she and her husband heard that Tara was in the family way, they were sold on the idea of a Welsh. Quite elated, the drive back home proved quick and exciting. A couple of days later, however, plans changed; Tara was not pregnant at all. Pols and her husband made an enormous amount of phone calls to breeders. The answer was the same: No newborn Welsh available. However, there was just one five-month-old Welsh puppy, from a breeder in the south of the country. But one little snake in the grass remained: a holiday trip that couldn't be cancelled. Somehow, though, she'd have to find a way to get this little dog...a little dog named Charley.

Marjolyn Pols started writing stories at the age of six. She's been a member of editing committees for several magazines and responsibilities to fill the gaps in these magazines, made writing stories a daily must. In the pursuit of quite another career (Export manager for international companies) writing was restricted to business related items. Lately, she's begun her passion of writing again.

But, Charley himself, of course, is the real author of the book. It's his first. The author and her family currently live in the Netherlands.
