The Unlikely Functions of the United States Government -- A Mischievous Teen Finds Life, Laughs and More in Washington, D.C.

ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 14, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Americans generally know only as much about the workings of the American government as they are told or able to glean from television and history books. History books reduce fantastic battles and epic moments to dry facts. In between, there is the rare and distinguished world of historical fiction. When written well, historical fiction will educate and challenge the reader. Master Jones Goes to Washington: The Truth, The Whole Truth and Nothing But The Truth (now available through 1stBooks Library) by author Hugh Brown is one such book.

Master Jones is the story of an intelligent young man from Jacksonville, Fla., who is chosen, against all odds, to become a page in the U.S. House of Representatives during the fall of 1968. During a mere 17 days in Washington, Chuck Jones learns about a world he never even knew existed. During the day he is a page. During the night he and the other pages explore the Washington, D.C. nightlife. From strip clubs to gay bars, the young boys experience all life has to offer and more.

Washington, as it turns out, is both a fascinating and dangerous place to call home. The boys are forced to choose between their naive ambitions and the "code of conduct" to which they are bound.

Along the way, Jones meets and interacts with future speaker Carl Albert, future presidents Gerald Ford and George H. W. Bush and Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas. The boys also work through the night during the second longest filibuster in House history and Jones witnesses the testimony of Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin.

Brown is a graduate of Jacksonville University, holding degrees in history and political science. He hosted "Watchdog," a local version of "Meet The Press" in Jacksonville for two years. He now lives in Orlando, Fla., and works as an administrator and author. Brown has also organized charitable fundraisers and managed local political campaigns.

Master Jones Goes To Washington is Brown's first book. He is currently working on his second book, a story about his ancestor Hugh Brown I, a Tory in South Carolina during the Revolutionary War.
