Personal Chemistry Doubles Reaction Types in Knowledge Database

UPPSALA, Sweden, Mar. 4, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Personal Chemistry

- Ultra-fast, reproducible microwave chemistry synthesis methods

- Significant contribution from top academic labs

- Focused on medicinal chemistry

Personal Chemistry announces Emrys(TM) PathFinder Release 2, which radically improves the range of addressed reaction types. Emrys(TM) PathFinder is a unique database of verified, reproducible reactions of microwave-assisted synthesis. Emrys PathFinder is an integrated part of Coherent Synthesis(TM), Personal Chemistry's suite of technologies for accelerating and improving synthesis development in medicinal chemistry. Emrys Knowledge Builder incorporates Emrys PathFinder.

"This is just what chemists have been asking for," commented Anders Qvarnstrom, EVP of Marketing at Personal Chemistry. "The lack of reproducible microwave-assisted synthesis methods in the published literature does not do justice to the potential of the technology, and places the responsibility on end-users to work out useful methods for themselves. Release 2 of Emrys(TM) PathFinder does the work for them, for an extensive range of reaction types, so that microwave-assisted synthesis becomes a productivity enhancement in everybody's hands."

Contributions from Scientific Partners

"Although Emrys PathFinder contains mostly proprietary methods developed by Personal Chemistry, members of our Scientific Partnership Program have been very active in contributing their work," said Prof. Pilotti, Principal Scientist at Personal Chemistry. The Scientific Partnership Program includes Nobel Laureate Barry Sharpless (Scripps Institute, San Diego), and Oliver Kappe (Karl-Franzens University, Graz, Austria).

Coherent Synthesis: A New Paradigm for Organic Synthesis "We have focused solely on delivering the value of Coherent Synthesis(TM) to the pharmaceutical industry for the last 3 years," commented Hans Johansson, CEO of Personal Chemistry. "Emrys PathFinder Release 2 is a critical component of our aggressive development schedule, and yet another example of our ability to deliver on our promises. Expect to see further important milestones from Personal Chemistry in 2003."

Personal Chemistry, a private Swedish company, is the market leader in instrumentation, knowledge products, reaction kits and accessories for microwave-assisted synthesis. Having manufactured the first purpose-built systems in 2000, Personal Chemistry has installed close to 300 systems, and counts all the top pharmaceutical and biotech companies among its customers. Personal Chemistry develops and markets Coherent Synthesis(TM), a complete solution for faster, higher quality chemistry development, targeting the needs of medicinal chemistry in drug discovery. The growth rate of Coherent Synthesis is high; to date, over 350,000 microwave synthesis reactions have been run, with an estimated growth rate of 10,000 reactions per week, world wide.

The company has its headquarters in Uppsala, Sweden and subsidiaries in Boston (U.S.), Cambridge (U.K.) and Konstanz (Germany). Personal Chemistry currently employs 100 people of whom more than 30 are chemists. The company was founded in 1998 and the main share holders are Health Cap, Investor Growth Capital, 3i, and SEB Foretagsinvest.
