Honor Thy Forefather -- New Novel Depicts Three Families Split by the Civil War

RADCLIFF, Ky., March 18, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- The Civil War was a time in American history when the nation was split down the middle. The North battled the South, and families battled each other. Deep in the hills of West Virginia and Virginia, mountain men fight in the name of honor in John Michael Jarvis' new historical epic novel, Mountaineers' Honor (now available through 1stBooks Library).

Based on his ancestors, Jarvis's fictional account of family clashes during the Civil War is a harrowing tale of conflicting opinions and principles of three West Virginian families converging in the hills from the Kanawha River to Little Sandy River. The patriarchs of three families, Nathan Martin, Joe Engle and Tom Jarvis, all great great-grandfathers to Jarvis, find themselves and the members of their families split about the breaking of the Union that sent the nation spiraling into war. The three join separate sides, Joe and Tom fighting for the preservation of the Union and Nathan teaming up with the Rebels. The novel follows the three throughout the battles and horrors of war. Amidst the cannon fire and gun blasts, each man learns what it means to fight for a cause and maintain their honor.

Historically compelling, Jarvis writes an epic tale of one of the darkest eras of American history. "There was a time in our great country's history when tall men walked in the name of honor for the right to call a home of their sovereign state and for others to hold a new country together in unity," Jarvis states.

Jarvis was born in Charleston, W.Va. and grew up an "Air Force brat" in Hampton, Va., Wendover, Utah, Rantoul, Ill., Daytona Beach, Fla., Folkston, Ga. and Jacksonville, Fla. He graduated from the Ohio Institute of Technology in 1973. Serving for eight years in the U.S. Air Force, he worked for International Laser Systems, Litton Lasers, Martin Marietta and Lockheed Martin. A devoted family historian, Jarvis decided to write this novel based on his forefathers. Mountaineers' Honor is his first published novel.
