Take Time to Smell the Roses - Poetry Inspired By the Sea

CAMPBELL, Calif., March 19, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- The alluring new book of poetry Take Time to Smell the Roses (now available from 1st Books Library) by Robert Richey presents this man's life experiences through the verses of poems inspired by his life-long love affair with reading. He spent six years at sea with the United States Navy, and the theme of water and the ocean weaves an underlying current of his poems.

Richey unexpectedly lost his mother at the age of eight, two years before the stock market crash that inaugurated the Great Depression. His ensuing childhood experiences stand as an important influence upon his involvement with and immersion in reading. His poetry describes the world in which he grew up, one that no longer exists except in the minds and memories of his generation. He conveys his ideas in a unique style, and his poems focus on the importance of national pride that was instilled in him during his formative years spent in Texas.

Author Robert Richey makes his literary debut with Take Time to Smell the Roses. As a young man, he read poems like Evangeline, The Highwayman, The Raven, and many others. These works have served as his inspiration, and he wishes for his book to be a way of trying to pay back these great writers for unselfishly sharing their poetry with him. After working his way through two years of junior college by delivering newspapers, he enlisted in the Navy. He became a union teamster, and eventually earned, with honors, an Engineering degree from a university in California in 1963. He and his wife are currently enjoying their retirement.
