On a Voyage to Glory or Ruin - A unique nautical fiction novel set during the 16th century

PORTSMOUTH, R.I., March 21, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- It is a time of religious and political struggle: late 16th century Europe. England is alone in facing the vast Spanish empire of King Phillip II. England has recently adopted the Protestant religion and Phillip is determined to rid Northern Europe of the religious dissention, which has sprouted. In order to finance his army, Phillip has ordered his men to assemble large quantities of silver to be transported from his American empire over the Atlantic. Only defiant Queen Elizabeth Tudor stands between Phillip and his dream of global dominion. The mood is set as author Kevin Glynn brings to life his heroic and villainous characters in Voyage of Reprisal (now available through 1stBooks Library).

The story introduces Robert Lawton, a young but weathered shipmaster. Lawton has just returned to London after a trading voyage with Spain, where Spanish officials and their crew attacked his men and seized his consignment. A bit soft around the edges, Lawton is enticed into a dangerous venture by a hardened brigand and old family friend, Richard Hawthorne. Hawthorne has been commissioned by Queen Elizabeth to assemble a squadron of English galleons in order to plunder Phillip's treasure fleet before it reaches Spain. Tempted by glory and hoping to seek vengeance, Lawton becomes Hawthorne's second mate and sets sail on the Elanor Rose. Immediate dissention among the fleet's high-ranking officers challenges the solidity of the fleet. The crew is on a path to glory or ruin. The question is: which will it be?

Paying acute attention to historical detail, Glynn explores the joy, sorrow and hardships of life in the 1500s. He hopes his extensive historical research on the subject will allow the reader to become more educated about the time period, while enjoying a rousing sea story.

Glynn is a resident of Portsmouth, R.I., and received a bachelor's of arts degree in journalism from the University of Rhode Island. He is a former U.S. Navy reserve officer and has a background in computer security and counterintelligence.
