The Fellas follows the lives of four men who forge friendships car-pooling to work. They are four typical guys with diverse backgrounds who live in nearby neighborhoods and work together in St. Louis. Herbert is a sensitive and mild-mannered African American. After the death of his father, his mother was left to raise him, and Herbert inherited some of her traits. Chu is a fun loving second generation Asian American with a great sense of humor, but needs to learn some discipline to move forward in life. Raymond, also African American, is the most mature and family oriented of the four. Fernando is a womanizing Hispanic American. Acting on impulse, he and his habit of risky behavior are headed down a destructive path.
Their friendship develops respect in personal ways as they share experiences, discuss family and talk about their concerns. In the end, they must stand together as one of their own fades away from a devastating illness.
Edwards has lived in St. Louis all her life. She is married and enjoys her life with her husband and sons. Her career as a nurse allows her many encounters with people and a chance to glimpse into their lives. In writing, Edwards uses tactics such as mixing her views of work and life into her storylines. The Fellas is her first book.
