300 Scania Tractors to British Supermarket Retailer

SODERTALJE, Sweden, April 22, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Scania (OtherOTC:SCVAY) will deliver 300 tractors to the supermarket retailer Safeway Stores plc. The order has been placed following a strong showing by Scania in highly competitive performance trials arranged recently by Safeway.

"We have operated Scania trucks for many years and are thus well aware of the value they add to our business," comments Lawrence Christensen, Director of Logistics for Safeway. Our decision to once again opt for Scania was taken as we concluded it is the product that will deliver us the lowest possible whole-life costs."

"Safeway is a long-standing Scania operator and this order not only further cements our relationship but also reinforces how well the Scania product dovetails into supermarket operations," comments Dan Hoij, Managing Director of Scania (Great Britain) Limited.

The trucks are ordered for Safeway's 2003 fleet replacement programme. The tractor unit model selected features Scania's 11-litre 340 hp (Scania R114LA4x2NA 340). Based across the UK the new vehicles will work on Safeway's primary distribution operations, running into its 14 Regional Distribution Centres nationwide.
