Little Buddy -- New Book Recounts Family's Discovery and Raising of Baby Sparrow

GRAFTON, Ohio, April 22, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Animals can have a great impact on many people's lives. Sometimes people can have an impact on animals' lives, too. In her new book, Little Buddy: A Baby Bird's Story of Survival (now available through 1stBooks Library), Donna Jelen recounts how she and her family saved a little bird's life.

Jelen tells the story of how her family successfully raised a baby sparrow and brought it into adulthood. Putting some birdseed in the birdfeeder on a warm sunny day, Jelen was alerted to something moving under a pine tree. On closer inspection, she discovered a featherless little bird flopping around. Hoping to return it to its parents or leave it under the care of another bird, she helped place it in a tree, without touching it, and left it in a small plastic strawberry basket.

Over the next few months, the family fed and cared for it, watching it move from devouring food from an eyedropper to pecking it right off of a toothpick. They watched in amazement as the little sparrow grew new and different feathers. Eventually, they raised him into the point where he could use his wings, yet he had already flown into their hearts.

Jelen's story is an inspirational one about life and love for all ages.

Jelen has always enjoyed watching the small animals eat and carry on their daily activities. She has birdfeeders and a birdbath in her yard and enjoys the constant activity around these feeders. This is her first book based on her amazing discovering and rearing of Buddy, the sparrow.
