Forget the UFOs: Could Lightning be Alien Technology? -- New Science Fiction Novel Explores Lightning as Path to Alternate World

HOWELL, Mich., May 1, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Beautiful and dangerous, the lightning of a storm prompts fascination. For John Mathews, an altercation with this force of nature discloses not only amazement, but the true purpose of lightning: transportation. In The Lightning Man: The Beginning by D.E. Mullens (now available through 1stBooks Library), an ordinary truck driver finds himself transported to another world, where the only way out is the defeat of an unbelievable mystic and warlord.

After a lighting strike causes John and his truck to disappear, he is transported to a thick jungle. With no food or water, he is surrounded by new creatures. When he rescues an alien woman, Kara, he learns the secret behind the occurrence that has riddled humans since the beginning of time.

To escape, he must fight a merciless mad man, Gar. Gar rules the Mountain Men, a tribe of stone age rejects. He owns the alien orb, which gives him the power of the lightning. But Gar only owns half of this mysterious orb. The other half is kept by Crone, a mystical hag in the desert who is protected by an army of tiny men.

John has the daunting task of surviving, defeating Gar and Crone and figuring out how to operate the orb. This former truck driver becomes a man fighting for life. The Lightning Man is a riveting story that transforms a usual phenomenon into an adventure that delves into the idea that humans are only a fraction of the life that exists in the universe.

Mullens' idea for The Lightning Man was born while watching a storm roll across the plains of Texas. The only boy in a family of seven sisters, Mullens lived in the West Virginia mountains until age 11, when his family moved to Michigan. When he discovered life outside West Virginia, he devoted himself to learning. He enlisted the Marines at age 17. He has two boys, a girl and one stepson. This is his first book, and he is currently writing a sequel.
