The Wrong Place at Many Wrong Times -- New Crime Novel Follows Serial Killer's Chase of Sole Witness Across America

QUARTZSITE, Ariz., May 1, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- All Baxter Gray needed was a carton of milk on a late Saturday night in Pensacola, Fla. What he got was the beginning of a long escape away from a serial killer who knows Baxter's the only witness to an armed robbery. In LaDelle F. Blevins' Graystalker (now available through 1stBooks Library), Baxter's seemingly successful escape turns into a pursuit that spans from Florida to Texas to Idaho.

Pulling up to the convenience store that night, Baxter frantically dials 911 when he notices an armed robbery and double homicide taking place inside. The killer departs ahead of police, but not before noticing Baxter and stealing his car. With his wallet inside the stolen car, Baxter knows he should leave town for his sister's home in Boise, Idaho. A good deed he does for a stranded motorist and her daughter lands him on the Dallas evening news, leading Avery Scullin, the serial killer, onto his trail.

He tracks down the house where Baxter is staying, picking up his mapped route straight to Boise. Scullin follows the witness to Idaho, but not before taking out his rage on several more victims, which places more detectives' attention on Scullin.

Baxter, unaware of the killer's pursuit, meets a woman he becomes involved with, Tulsa Malone. After more murders at a tennis tournament the couple is playing in, Scullin's final attempt at murder ends at Tulsa's home. Justice is served, and the man who chose to do the right thing finishes first.

Graystalker is the suspenseful story of a serial killer's madness, an ordinary man's collision with danger and the police work necessary to coordinate a chase that spans the length of the United States. Blevins keeps the reader engaged until the very end with a story that could happen to anyone making a late trip to the store.

Blevins is a retired U.S. Navy officer and former public high school teacher. He has written a number of articles for local and national newspapers. An Idaho native, he is a graduate of Idaho State College. This is his first book.
