A Life Less Ordinary; New Book Recounts One Man's Extraordinary Life

TUCSON, Ariz., May 6, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Over the span of a lifetime, people stockpile a surplus of interesting and unique stories. Perhaps none have amassed such a unique collection as Warren S. Hayes, who details his crazy and adventurous life in his new book, Hippocratic Oaf (now available through 1stBooks).

"Some wonderful experiences cry out to be recorded for others to enjoy. They surge over the edges of memory and spill onto the written page," Hayes states.

Hayes presents his life in this book recounting some of the interesting and amusing events he has collected over a "very long life." It begins in the log cabin of his childhood and carries him to Los Angeles and the explosive South Pacific during World War II to medical school and practicing medicine. If that is not enough, he has stories of scuba diving with Jean Michelle Cousteau, Jacques Cousteau's son, watching an amazing solar eclipse off of Mazatlan and on through a plethora of fun and unforgettable adventures.

"This book is different from all other books on the market because (I am) the only individual in this solar system who has lived through these particular, wonderful exciting experiences," Hayes says.

He will take the reader from the woods and prairies of Illinois to the bustling cities of Chicago, Los Angeles and New York City. He sets sail to six Hawaiian Islands and into the danger of New Hebrides and Solomon Islands in the South Pacific during World War II. Go country hopping to China, Europe, Turkey, Egypt, Israel and the Soviet Union, until he settles down in Arizona.

"Few other citizens of this Earth have enjoyed such crazy, wonderful, hilarious, heart-warming, rewarding experiences. Read it and enjoy," he says.

Hayes attended UCLA for three years majoring in political science before being whisked off to the Army and World War II. Afterwards, he returned to UCLA for three more years, earning a bachelor's degree in zoology. He went on to graduate from New York University, Bellevue Medical Center, College of Medicine with a doctorate. After an internship, he spent three years in residency at NYU and Bellevue Medical Center, and ultimately certified as a specialist in physical medicine and rehabilitation. He spent 25 years practicing in the field. Since retiring, he has spent the last 19 years taking creative writing courses at Arizona University in Tucson, Ariz., where he currently resides. Hippocratic Oaf is his second book.
