SODERTALJE, Sweden, May 07, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Scania's strategic alliance with Hino of Japan has now yielded results in the form of the first delivery to a customer, Hoshiyama Transport. Hoshiyama established contact with Scania at the Tokyo Motor Show, where Scania exhibited its products for the first time in Japan.
As a haulier of foodstuffs in the Tokyo region, Hoshiyama Transport currently operates a fleet of 23 trucks. The new Scania - an R124 with a 440-hp turbocompound engine - has been assigned the symbolic registration number 1.
The next delivery will be made in a few days to a customer in Nagoya.
Training of service workshop mechanics is also in full swing at well- equipped facilities arranged by Hino, where Scania is now training instructors. These, in turn, will train dealer and customer mechanics.
After some years of discussion, Scania and Japanese truckmaker Hino entered an alliance to reinforce each company's market coverage. One of the first projects undertaken as part of the agreement was the sale of Scania's heavy tractors by Hino on the Japanese market.
The agreement also identified a number of areas of in which both companies can successively increase their revenue and lower their costs. One such area is emission control technology, in which the companies will draw on their combined knowhow to continue to reduce the environmental impact of diesel engines.
