Footprints Left On The 20th Century; Newly Released Autobiography Highlights The Life Of An Agricultural Pilot And Helicopter Pioneer

NEW HARBOR, Maine, May 14, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- It all began with a book, titled Flying with Lindberg. This book introduced to author Carrol M. Voss the fixation that would change his destiny forever: his interest in aviation. This led to a successful career and the creation of his first book, Wing and Rotor: The Highs and Lows (now available through 1stBooks Library).

Voss, the son of two American missionaries, was born in China, but grew up on a farm in Nebraska. After high school, Voss attended the University of Nebraska, where he received a degree in entomology. From there, the young man went on to graduate school at the University of Wisconsin, where he began a study of insect/bug control on the food supply, an interest which would pave the way for his career.

When World War II began, Voss left his formal education and joined the U.S. Navy, where he became a pilot. He married soon after and returned to Wisconsin to pursue his doctorate. His graduate project was to dust and spray crops in Kenosha, Wis. with a dust rig he'd made from a 1938 Lincoln Zephyr. When helicopters emerged as a viable means of transportation, Voss saw the Zephyr's replacement. He became a helicopter pilot in 1949, his interest in food supply and flight merged together as he became a world expert in helicopter applications of insecticide.

In 1958, Voss established an aerial insecticide application company, called AgRotors Inc. Starting out with only an initial investment of $15,000 and one Bell 47 helicopter, the company has grown immensely and is still a thriving success today. In fact, his company was lauded for its speedy response to the outbreak of West Nile Virus in 1999, by the mayor of New York City, according to John F. Zugschwert, retired soldier, helicopter pilot and corporate executive.

An inspiring story, Wing and Rotor takes a trip back through time to offer a remarkable glimpse of the emergence and development of the agricultural aviation industry by a business pioneer.

Voss currently resides in New Harbor, Maine.
