Special Olympics Athletes Go for the Gold, L.A. Regional Games Test Athlete's Mettle


LOS ANGELES, May 24, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- REMINDER -- Special Olympics Hold L.A. Regional Games



 WHAT:        -- Ceremonial running and lighting of the torch

              -- Competition in track & field, golf and tennis

              -- Medal ceremonies throughout day

 WHO:         -- 350 Special Olympics athletes

              -- 700 volunteers cheering on athletes

 WHY:         Year-round competition is an integral part of local
              Special Olympics programs.  Special Olympics Southern
              California serves over 11,000 children and adults, ages
              eight to 80, with mental retardation in an 11-county
              region of Southern California.  There are approximately
              3,000 Special Olympians in the Los Angeles Region, which
              includes Long Beach, South Bay, Greater Los Angeles,
              Westside, Tri-Valley and Santa Clarita area programs.
