Italian National Day Presented By Independence Blue Cross Returns To The Great Plaza At Penn's Landing To Kick Off The 2003 PECO Energy Multicultural Series


PHILADELPHIA, May 30, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Explore the unique and exciting culture of Italy with the PECO Multicultural Series during Italian National Day on Sunday, June 8, 2003 from 12 noon to 6 p.m. This free event will return to the Great Plaza at Penn's Landing, Chestnut Street and Columbus Boulevard. The celebration features a wide variety of Italian cultural performances, products and cuisine. Independence Blue Cross is the presenting sponsor of the 2003 Summer Season at Penn's Landing.

The national Holiday of the Republic of Italy, La Festa Della Republica Italiana, is celebrated annually at Penn's Landing on the first Sunday in June. The event has become tradition in Philadelphia. Italian National Day commemorates the establishment of a republican democracy in Italy of June 2, 1948. The event stands to celebrate and promote Italian culture. The Italian National Day celebration is organized by the Alliance of Italian American Associations and is attended by many prominent city and state officials.

There will be music and diverse dishes, a fashion show, along with puppet shows, face painting, and other entertainment for children. This year's performers will include Italian rock band REAL, engaging the crowd with popular Italian songs.

Il Coro Gabriele D'Annunzio, dressed in authentic costumes from the Abruzzi region of Italy will perform traditional folk songs. Italian opera songs will be presented by Soprano Rachael. A fashion show will feature wears of local Italian-Americans and IDEA 71 will finish the day with their wide selection of Italian music favorites.

Well known Luigi and Giovanni Caterers will be offering the finest in imported Italian food specialties, while La Festa's annual pasta eating contest will attract appetites young and old.

Admission is free for all PECO Energy Multicultural Series events.
