A Cop of Gold -- New Novel Follows the Adventures of Intelligent, Under Appreciated, Slightly Overweight NYPD Officer

NEW YORK CITY, June 2, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- She is trying to catch a serial killer, is on the hunt for a husband, and is looking to drop a few pounds on the side. She's Debby Gold, the formidable female of New York's finest and the main character of the new novel, Debby Gold, NYPD (now available through 1stBooks), by Lee Thuna.

Thuna brings a new kind of cop to the streets in her new book and Debby has her work cut out for her. Debby is in her mid-20s and is slightly overweight. Her parents thought after college she would settle down with a nice doctor in a grand house on Long Island, but Debby, much to the dismay of every one, joined the NYPD. She also carries around a crush on her middle-aged bachelor boss, Lieutenant Eugene Costello, who wishes she would get transferred to another precinct because she is just too smart.

As if things weren't tough enough, her best friend, Gail Bolinger, the beautiful daughter of a prominent judge, has fallen madly in love. Her police instincts kicking in, Debby feels there is something not quite right with Gail's boyfriend, Alan. She can't keep from interrogating Gail about Alan, especially after the bizarre death of Gail's brother. Although her curiosity is driving the two long-time friends apart, Debby is certain Alan may be trying to kill Gail's whole family, including Gail.

Set against the electrifying background of bars and nightclubs of the swinging New York singles scene, Thuna weaves a gripping tale of love, deceit, betrayal and friendship in a contemporary story of a modern cop in post-Sept. 11, 2001 New York.

Thuna was born in the Bronx and is a graduate of Hunter College. She is a known playwright and her play FUGUE won the American Theatre Critics Award. Her other plays include The Natural Look, which starred Gene Hackman and Brenda Vaccaro, Let Me Hear You Smile (co-author) and The Eleventh. She has also written teleplays for the TV movies I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, Family Secrets and Torch Song as well as episodes for Lou Grant, Family and Angie and created the TV sitcoms The Goodtime Girls and Roommates. She currently splits her home between New York City and Palm Springs, Calif. and is a member of the Dramatists Guild and Writers Guild of America.
