Mystery, Murder and the Divisive Abortion Debate -- New Novel Tells Story of Priest, a Student's Plot and An Abortionist's Murder

PHOENIX, June 3, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- In a gripping, ironic story of good and evil, Father Luke Wolfe, an elderly priest and high school English teacher, tells the story of a student's murder plot and its surprising outcome. Father, Forgive Them (now available through 1stBooks) by John Becker, S.J., is a profound story of a priest, his beloved students and the divisive issue of abortion.

Larry Curtland, a senior in Father Luke's English class, seems to have followed through with his goal of murdering his father, an abortionist. His father is dead, but Larry surprisingly is not the culprit. The cause of his father's death is a mystery to everyone, until Larry unwittingly uncovers the criminal in a class project with a dramatic conclusion.

The student is stricken with grief after realizing the enormity of his intended actions, but a girl helps him by relating her own experience of being confronted with evil. A captivating story that addresses the abortion debate from a viewpoint that's not confrontational, Father Luke, Larry and other students help weave this story into a powerful mystery novel.

Becker is a Jesuit who has taught high school English for almost 50 years. He has also been a Catholic priest for nearly 40 years. A former teacher in San Jose and San Francisco, he currently teaches at Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix. This is Becker's first novel, although he has previously published short stories.
