A Monkey in the Family -- New Book for Children is an Informative Piece About a Family Raising a Spider Monkey

LOS ANGELES, June 3, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- For some people, the fascination of having a pet monkey stems from that curious little primate with the proper name that mischievously wiggled out of his yellow covered books and into childhood consciousness. Raising a monkey is, however, not always an endearing endeavor, but it can be fun as Katherine Jones points out in her new children's book, Francis, A Pet Spider Monkey (now available through 1stBooks).

Jones presents a heartwarming, educational and fun book about raising a real spider monkey in a home environment. Francis is a spider monkey whose early days were spent swinging from vines in the South American rain forests of his birth. His adventure begins at six months, when poachers tear him away from his mother and ship him to North America. Caged and alone in a city pet shop, the sad and frightened little monkey is purchased by a loving family with two boys. Unsure of his gender, they name him Francis and the games of raising a spider monkey begin.

Fitting well into the family structure, Francis loves the boys and his new home. However, the family finds numerous challenges to raising an animal that can think and open doors. Over the next four years, the fun and fond memories form in Jones' informative book. Through research, she details how the family and the monkey relate and interact as well as how spider monkeys gather information and communicate with each other. She also provides the reader with the way family is structured in the forests and why the small simians are becoming extinct.

Fun, informative and charming, Francis is a great read for anyone's family of little monkeys.

Jones is a retired administrative secretary residing in the San Fernando Valley with her husband. A graduate of California State University at Northridge, she has written three other books in addition to Francis, entitled How I Overcame Grief, Jerry's Nightmare (available through 1stBooks) and Raid at Inchon - Left Behind the Lines.
