The Father Of African Nationalism -- New Book Explores The Questions and Answers that Shaped the Black Experience

SAINT ANDREWS, N.Y., June 3, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- The nation sets aside a day in January and the month of February to celebrate the African-American experience in America. For a few days each year, people are allowed to celebrate the vision of Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X and Rosa Parks. The celebration deserves to continue and the pride should be allowed to swell forth. Questions and Answers -- The Life of Marcus Mosiah Garvey (now available through 1stBooks) by Leonard Morris, is a book that celebrates the true black experience.

Questions and Answers is a powerful journey into the life of a man who is a "great Jamaican in the twentieth century, a forceful leader who worked hard to develop a spirit of pride among his people ... He turned their attention to the birthplace of their foreparents -- Africa. He changed many negative attitudes they had about themselves," according to author Leonard Morris.

Marcus Mosiah Garvey was a man with a mission and a dream. After immigrating to the United States in 1916, Garvey began formulating a plan to return the people to their home in Africa. Claiming a following of over 6 million people, Garvey founded Black Star Steamship Line to provide the transportation back to Africa. However, his plan did not work out as well as he thought it did. People simply did not want to leave the land they had worked so hard to build.

Morris says, "Most ... leaders of the 1920's did not support the ideas of Marcus Garvey. They felt he had weakened their fight for equal rights throughout the world. How wrong they were! Today, however, Marcus Garvey is respected for his beliefs." Garvey gave the African-American community a "feeling of self-respect, which many had never felt before," Morris states.

Leonard Morris came to the United States in 1968 and says he was astonished to hear the African-American community speak with pride about Marcus Garvey. Morris is a Jamaican artist who has done 85 paintings in oil depicting Marcus Garvey's life story. Morris hopes that those people who read his book take an in-depth look at Marcus Garvey's life and goals.
