Behind the Stained Glass Window -- New Novel Tells Coming of Age Story of Girl in Abusive Catholic Convent Boarding School

TOLEDO, Ohio, June 4, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- With the recent scandals rocking the foundation of the Catholic Church, the secrets of years of silence seem to be seeping out from behind the altar. Behind the Stained Glass Window (now available through 1stBooks) is the new novel by Patzi Raven focusing on the trials of attending a Catholic boarding school.

Raven reveals the story of Aurora, a young girl attending St. Philomena Academy convent school. There she finds more than religious mystery to explore. The indifferent cruelty inflicted by the nuns on the pupils of the boarding school and the dark secrets that lie dormant within the academy provoke Aurora and her close group of friends to ingenious feats of cunning and guile.

Raven invites the reader for a necessary look at the workings of a world where the oppression of children is institutionalized and the rites of growing up are soiled by guilt. Weaving the past and present into masterful reality, Raven explores riveting themes of adolescent piety, sexual awakening and the intensity of female friendship. Against the austere backdrop of the convent, a charming story emerges of coming of age, the persisting sense of justice and the value of friendship through time.

Raven was born in Toledo, Ohio. When she was nine, she attended a boarding school in Michigan, where the desire to write a book based on her experiences was born. Inspired by The Diary of Anne Frank, she decided to keep her own diary and dreamed of publishing a book. Behind the Stained Glass Window is the realization of that dream. Raven attended the University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University and the University of Denver. She taught elementary in northwest Ohio for 31 years.
