The Making of a Monster -- New Novel Examines the Creation of a Teenage Rapist

NORTH MIAMI BEACH, Fla., June 17, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- A crush becomes an obsession for a teenage boy who feels the bitter sting of rejection. In the new novel State of Shock (now available through 1stBooks), author Henry Ben-Dov explores the anger and torment that transforms a normal teenager into a rapist.

Ben-Dov examines the turmoil of male teenagers and the terrible results of rejection and lust. Craig Torrenson believes he is in love with Brenda, a gorgeous redhead and the most popular girl in his school. He tries to get her to notice him, but she rejects him mercilessly. Repeated attempts lead to worse results, leaving Craig stinging a hard kick to the groin. His big ego shattered by harsh rejection, Craig feels he must prove his manhood by attempting to dominate, violate and teach her a lesson in manners and compassion.

His mind obsessed with sex, he begins to follow Brenda and charts his plan of action. After acquiring keys to her apartment, he devises to sneak in and rape her in the night. However, unfamiliar with the layout of the apartment, he makes a wrong turn and ends up exacting his revenge on her divorcee mother. With a gun to her head, she gives little resistance. A police investigation follows and the heat eventually leads to murder. After going to court, Craig is released due to insufficient evidence. His attorney arranges for him to start over in Florida where he hopes to turn a new leaf.

Staying with a judge and his two teenage daughters, Craig finds himself in trouble again. Carmen, the 14-year-old daughter, falls for him and drags him to bed. Juliette, the 19-year-old daughter of the judge, knows there is something more to Craig. However, Craig can't hide the past as his dominating tendencies emerge and more blood is shed. Will anyone be able to stop Craig?

With varied experiences as a criminal investigator, reporter, foreign correspondent, writer, magazine editor as well as news editor of a national daily paper, Ben-Dov has much to contribute to the written word. He's published works in Israel and Hebrew, including five novels; several short story collections, including Before Pulling the Trigger; a collection of underground short stories on display in the Israeli National Library; hundreds of short stories; special reports; columns; features; and articles. State of Shock is his second novel published in English. His first, Of Love and Blood, was published in August of 2000.
