Telelogic Introduces Dynamic Requirements Management and Unveils DOORS/ERS 7.0

Intelligent Traceability, Proactive Suspect Links and Enterprise Change Proposal System Manage Evolving Requirements Specifications During Development

MALMO, Sweden, July 7, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Telelogic (Stockholm:TLOG) (Other OTC:TGIAF), the leading global provider of solutions for advanced systems and software development, today introduced Dynamic Requirements Management to the systems and software development community. Dynamic Requirements Management is the practice of effectively managing an evolving set of requirements within a complex incremental/iterative development project. This is only possible through the new and enhanced features found in DOORS/ERS 7.0.

With the dynamic nature of today's modern software and systems development practices, it is no longer possible to gather a complete set of requirements specifications upfront and set them in stone for the duration of the project. A more practical approach, which more accurately reflects the "real-life" development process, is to allow requirements specifications to evolve as the development project progresses. While ideal in theory, the reality is that until now requirements management tools have lacked the advanced functionality needed to balance a myriad of requirements changes with tight control of project scope, cost, quality and delivery. The increasing popularity of distributed/global development models makes these challenges exponentially more complex.

DOORS/ERS 7.0 solves these challenges for the first time through Dynamic Requirements Management. State-of-the-art capabilities like Intelligent Traceability, Proactive Suspect Links and an Enterprise Change Proposal System (ECPS) provide the highest levels yet of requirements visibility, collaboration and validation. Used by more than 60,000 users at over 1,000 companies around the world, Telelogic DOORS is a multi-platform, enterprise-wide system for capturing, linking, tracing, analyzing and managing changes to information to ensure a project's compliance to specified requirements and standards. Version 7.0 extends these capabilities to complex incremental development, cementing its position as the pre-eminent requirements management solution on the market.

"DOORS has been at the forefront of requirements management for a decade and has achieved many 'industry firsts' along the way," said Anders Lidbeck, president and CEO of Telelogic. "This legacy of innovation continues with DOORS 7.0 and Dynamic Requirements Management, a capability which raises the bar for requirements management tools and the value that they deliver."

Comments from Industry Analysts

"The breakneck speed of today's development lifecycle has created two major, almost contradictory challenges: the flexibility to accommodate change, yet with tight project control," said Matt Light, research director at Gartner. "Collaborative enterprise requirements systems that can help resolve this conflict and scale up to support a distributed, perhaps global, development organization is a good way to reduce risk and ensure that the features needed are actually delivered."

"To drive software relevance, quality and productivity, organizations must first establish effective requirements processes and then use tools to facilitate communication and to simplify traceability," said Melinda- Carol Ballou, senior research analyst at META Group. "Although traceability is most often provided for requirements, users should seek tools that enable traceability across artifacts also -- not just for the requirements but for models, code, and tests, to gain better understanding and rigor across the development lifecycle."

Comments from Customers

"The new feature of Intelligent Traceability in DOORS 7.0 allows for automated full lifecycle traceability for all models," said Brenda Ellis, Systems Software Engineer, Instrumentation Modernization, ITT Industries. "This is especially important when working with spiral and parallel development models. This is the most innovative new functionality to support Requirements Management in years."

"DOORS 7.0 provides unique traceability features that requirements practitioners can truly appreciate," said Frank Salvatore, Senior Associate, High Performance Technologies, Inc. "The intelligent traceability features of DOORS 7.0 accommodate true milestone definitions in an intuitive way so that the dynamics of relationships throughout parallel and incremental developments can be realized. The ability to create baseline sets 'on-the-fly' saves us hours of mundane time and administrative effort allowing us to focus on the real program tasks."

"Intelligent Traceability is an invaluable lifecycle feature of DOORS 7.0," said Sara Martin, Senior Software Engineer, Integrated Defense Systems, Raytheon. "This capability provides integrity to system traceability by allowing users to preserve links relevant to each phase of system development."

"I had really been looking forward to the user dictionary in the spell check tool," said Patrick S. Roach, Shared Services Group, Requirements Management Support Services, Boeing. "The Intelligent Traceability feature is something else that I had asked for, but I had never envisioned the level of functionality which DOORS 7.0 provides."

"The additional functionality, such as the baseline sets; and fixes, such as displaying the view filters description, is a great step forward," said Tim O'Konski, HP Knowledge Engineering Services, Development Team, HP. "DOORS 7.0 is also compatible with our earlier version DOORS scripts."

"DOORS 7.0 is a significant advancement over earlier versions of DOORS in the number of major enhancements that Telelogic has introduced to the program. Quite simply, I love it," said Bob Gray, senior information specialist and DOORS Consultant, CSSI, Inc. "Most important to me is the new Intelligent Traceability feature which allows stronger validation and makes dynamic requirements management possible. I've been using DOORS 7.0 on a project using real data. In it we've created six different documents all linked together. From this we've created one baseline set composed of three documents. I've been able to see firsthand how the program captures the traceability in both the working documents and the baseline during all incremental development so that nothing is lost."

"The new Intelligent Traceability feature in DOORS 7.0 is an essential and excellent addition to DOORS' requirements management capabilities," said Dr. Saeed Fararooy, Managing Director, rcm2 limited, UK. "It allows a complete lifecycle approach to managing safety in projects involving introduction of innovative electronics or computer-based systems such as transportation, nuclear and other major hazards industries."

DOORS/ERS 7.0 Key Features

DOORS 7.0 supports Dynamic Requirements Management through the following key features:

 - Intelligent Traceability ensures that all teams are using the
right requirements for the increment or version they are working
on. Links are intelligently kept with the right baseline as
the project progresses ensuring conformance and quality.

The Intelligent Traceability capability, only found in DOORS 7.0, revolutionizes traceability for the first time since the introduction of requirements management tools in the late 1980s and significantly strengthens requirements validation. While traceability tools have been successful to varying degrees, in representing the history of requirements, they have not provided a full record of relationships at previous milestones. Until now, traceability has always represented the relationships between requirements in the present timeframe. For the first time in any requirements management tool, DOORS 7.0 goes beyond existing requirements management capabilities and provides a historical record of traceability and a complete audit trail.

With Intelligent Traceability, baselines can be taken -- and all links can be captured -- "on the fly" during incremental development and test so nothing is lost. Intelligent Traceability supports parallel development by teams working on different versions by allowing links to be made to different sets of baselined data. Baseline sets can be incrementally built up by adding each new document as it reaches the appropriate milestone.

 - Proactive Suspect Links ensures that each team member knows about
changes made by another, automatically. DOORS proactively generates
change notification directly in the requirements documents so
that nothing is overlooked. In DOORS 7.0, the information behind
the Suspect Link indicator has also been improved. Without even
referring to the modified document, users can see the change that
caused the link to become suspect. Users can quickly assess the
impact of any related change and decide whether action is
required, or they can simply clear the Suspect Link flag.
Users can even see whether changes have been baselined.

 - Enterprise Change Proposal System provides a role-based view of
the requirements component of the overall change process, managed
by Telelogic's change management solution ChangeSynergy(TM). ECPS
is a configurable change process that enables users to submit,
review and approve requirements changes within the requirements
document. This simplifies collaboration between team members and
ensures the impact of each change is understood before it is made.

In this enhanced version of ECPS (version 2), change proposals can be grouped together into a package. A Change Proposal Package is a grouping of multiple dependent change proposals that when applied together, result in the consistent change of multiple requirements so they are always consistent with each other. This makes control of change more efficient by associating related changes together and applying them at the same time. Availability and Platform Support

DOORS/ERS 7.0 is currently available and will run on the following operating systems: Microsoft Windows 98 (SE), Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2000 Server, Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a or Windows XP, Hewlett-Packard HP-UX B.11 (32-bit and 64-bit versions) and Sun Solaris 8 or 9.
