Homeland Security Grant Funds new Fire-Trax Accountability System

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich., July 7, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Wornall Secure Business Solutions, the multi-state distributor of Fire-Trax(r), has implemented a wireless version of this field personnel tracking system with Deputy Chief Scott D. Ferguson of the City of New Rochelle, N.Y. The system was funded by an "Assistance to Firefighters Grant" administered by FEMA and issued to the Chief for first responder accountability. Primary users of the Fire-Trax system include first response agencies for fires, mass casualty incidents, natural disasters, WMD events, or other large-scale incidents.

Wornall demonstrated the power of high-capacity field credentials, palm computing, and wireless connectivity to meet national requirements for tracking personnel at an emergency scene. The Fire-Trax system unites all responding agencies with a common, machine-readable field credential. This coordination of mutual aid is a primary objective of President Bush's recently announced First Responder Initiative for Homeland Security.

Using simple bar code scanning and palm operations, the Fire-Trax system identifies who has responded with what qualifications or certifications, when they arrived/departed, and where they are assigned. All of the information is obtained from the responders' identification credential that accompanies them to the scene. Fire-Trax also tracks apparatus and equipment deployed at the incident. The system features Symbol Technologies' scanner-enabled PDAs communicating to a command post via a Symbol 802.11 wireless LAN.
