WALNUT CREEK, Calif., July 15, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Poverty, hunger, war and desperation are the struggles that one, born during the turbulent time of Hitler's reign, has to go through and, hopefully, survive. Schneider, a World War II German civilian, recounts her harrowing experience of growing up during and after the Third Reich in her autobiography, Towards the Light at the End of the Tunnel (now available through 1stBooks).

As a young girl, Gisela and her family lived in Germany during the peak of Hitler's dictatorship until she and her family were separated. Scared and alone, Gisela tries to find her mother and brother amidst the dangers of war. In a desperate attempt to reunite her family, Gisela at first lives behind the Iron Curtain. In 1947, she escapes to West Germany with the help of some cousins.

Though married with a family and safe from the perils of war and the Iron Curtain, Gisela can't find happiness in her marriage. After many years of enduring an unfulfilled marriage, Gisela finds the strength to establish a new life, to find herself and discover a satisfying life of her own.
