STOCKHOLM, Sweden, July 17, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Skanska has been awarded a contract to expand and upgrade the Newtown Creek Water Pollution Control Plant in New York City. The contract is valued at USD 493 million, or SEK 3,930 M. Skanska accounts for 45 percent of the work, corresponding USD 222 M, or SEK 1,770 M. The contract is included in order bookings for the second quarter.

The customer is the New York City Department of Environmental Protection.

The contract is for the Newtown Creek Water Pollution Control Plant in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The facility has a capacity of about 310 million gallons (1.2 million cubic meters) per day. The project is one of the final phases of a major plant upgrade to fulfill federal requirements to provide secondary treatment of all sewage.

Work will begin in August of 2003 and is scheduled to be completed in January 2008.

Skanska USA Civil is the lead team member in a consortium responsible for the plant as well as the mechanical installations. The project calls for expanding the plant from 16 treatment areas to 24. This will involve extensive new construction of piping, aeration and sedimentation tanks and a new control building, as well as upgrading of existing plant components. In addition, the new and existing sections must be integrated.

The project will be carried out by the Skanska USA Civil companies Slattery Skanska, Gottlieb Skanska and Underpinning & Foundation Skanska. The joint venture includes Picone/McCullagh Joint Venture with a 30 percent share; and Perini Corporation with a 25 percent share.

For the same client, Skanska constructed the North River Water Pollution Control Plant, a 170 mgd (644,000 cubic meters) facility on the Hudson River. The facility is best known for the 28 acre (11-hectare) Riverbank State Park recreation facility located on top of the plant.
