Teleca expands Obigo with applications for instant messaging and presence-based services

MALMO, Sweden, July 23, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Teleca and Ecrio Inc. today signed a global licensing and distribution agreement under which Teleca will offer Ecrio's software for instant messaging and presence-based services as part of Obigo, Teleca's industry-leading application software suite for mobile phone manufacturers.

Presence-based services is the collective term for services that, for example, enable mobile phone users to see which of their contacts are reachable via various forms of communication, such as voice, instant messaging, chat group, and so on.

Ecrio develops interoperable instant messaging and presence-based services (IMPS) using open standards such as the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) IMPS specifications (formerly Wireless Village).

Integrating Ecrio's software with Obigo will enable phone manufacturers and mobile operators to create new, attractive services that simultaneously offer instant messaging and presence-based services, browsing and multimedia.

"Our new collaboration with Ecrio makes our product portfolio more complete," says Joakim Nydemark, Managing Director of Teleca Mobile Technologies AB. "Presence-based communication is expected to become a key component in mobile operators' networks and next-generation mobile phones. Together with Ecrio we'll be able to offer mobile operators and phone manufacturers new, exciting presence-based services that provide benefits and enjoyment to users at the same time as they increase operators' network traffic."

"Teleca is a leading supplier of mobile application software for handsets, and we're very pleased to be able to offer our solution as an integral part of Obigo," says Nagesh Challa, President, and CEO of Ecrio. "Our standards based handset and server software enables Ecrio and its partners to rapidly conceptualise and deploy new presence-based services, including instant messaging, voice messaging, presence-enabled phonebooks as well as corporate solutions."
