How to Survive in a 911 Environment -- New Book Provides Families with Tips to Protect Themselves During Criminal, Terrorist Attack

PROVIDENCE, Utah, July 25, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, American people have been more concerned with safety. Security is tighter everywhere: airports, large events, universities and city streets. To protect families from threats of the criminal elements lurking in the shadows to cause harm, Richard Riggs offers a new book How to Survive in a 911 Environment (now available through 1stBooks).

"Modern times have brought modern concerns. As we strive to protect ourselves from theft, bodily harm and property damage we realize that the police cannot be everywhere all the time," Riggs says.

In this book, Riggs provides families and the general population tips and ways to protect themselves against crime and terrorism in this new age of America. He covers three different topics in the book: crime, terrorism and home-preparedness. In the first part, Riggs shows how to protect oneself and one's family from a wide range of assailants such as rapists, pickpockets and purse-snatchers. He also covers how to protect motor vehicles, homes and valuables from thieves and how to protect oneself against intruders, while on the streets or traveling. He also offers tips on how to rid neighborhoods of crime.

The second part covers chemical and biological terrorism. Riggs breaks down the difference between the two, naming principle agents and microbes used, how they are delivered or detonated and certain disease and vaccines. Tips for protection against an attack is also discussed.

The last part deals with home preparedness. Riggs shows readers how to store water and food, things needed in first-aid kits and 72-hour emergency kits, as well as what to expect from utilities and communication services during an attack. Overall, Riggs provides the public with the information they need to survive any major attack or threat to safety.

"The aspect of personal protection from these criminal elements, terrorism and natural disasters becomes ours. We as citizens need to have information available to help us protect ourselves, families and neighborhoods ... This book is a must for every family," Riggs states.

Riggs has spent over 30 years in law enforcement, including positions as a police officer, chief of police and federal building and courtroom security supervisor. He also spent time as a nuclear plant RAD worker and received extensive radioactive contamination, decontamination, protection, emergency response and hazardous material training. How to Survive in a 911 Environment is his first book.
