Another Side of Paradise - Hurricanes; Hurricane survivor tells true story of her family's battle with Mother Nature at her worst

WESTCHESTER, Calif., July 29, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- According to a May 21, 2003 CNN article, the 2003 hurricane season may be one of the worst in years. For many, this is a terrifying thought. However, to author and former resident of the hurricane-ridden Caribbean Islands Kim Norris Samuels, hurricanes are simply a "fact of life." In her new book, Hurricanes, Paradise and Fairy Tales (now available through 1stBooks), she tells of her and her family's horrifying experience with hurricanes Luis and Marilyn.

Samuels and her family were living on the Caribbean Island of St. Maarten when it was hit with a "Category 5" hurricane in September 1995. Rated from one to five, hurricanes of any category are dangerous forces of nature; a "Category 5," however, is the "mother" of all hurricanes. With winds up to 200 mph, storm surges higher than 18 feet and funnel action, this hurricane destroys anything in its path and often leaves catastrophic damage and dozens---sometimes hundreds---dead or wounded in its wake. After surviving Mother Nature's fiercest tropical storm with hurricane Luis, the island and Samuels' family were hit with hurricane Marilyn just 10 days later.

Emotional and humorous, as well as informative, Hurricanes, Paradise and Fairy Tales details Samuels' preparations prior to the first hurricane, the events during the storms and the aftermath of both. The author also offers suggestions of what should and should not be done when preparing for this natural disaster and the flashbacks to happier times that helped Samuels "keep her sanity through it all."

Samuels' includes graphic details of paradise, beyond the sandy beaches and glistening waters, in a "down and dirty, no holds barred" style that will appeal even to those outside hurricane regions and show readers the amazing power of nature unleashed on many areas of the world each year.

Now, a resident of California, Samuels is a writer, comedienne and entrepreneur. She performs stand-up comedy and runs her own e-business called www.haveyoulostyourmind.com. She grew up in Queens, N.Y., and lived in the Caribbean for 10 years.

Hurricanes, Paradise and Fairy Tales is her first published book.
