Conversations with a Steam Pipe -- New Book Recounts Author's Uncommon Life

CONNER, Mont., August 6, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Everyone travels down a different road in life; their travels are all unique. Language gives human culture a way to share the travels of one's life. With Conversations with a Steam Pipe (now available through 1stBooks), author John Dial pens -- and thus immortalizes -- his life story of adventure, love and hardships.

Conversations with a Steam Pipe begins during the World War II era. Dial gives his impressions of the 1940s post-war America through his child eyes. He describes this era as a time when "the good guys wore white hats and were always victorious." As he grows up, Dial deals with bullies at school. His only escape is his unhappy home, where his family is crumbling due to alcoholism. He eventually moves in with his grandparents.

Dial explains the effects his early experiences had on him as a growing boy. He recounts his rebellious teenage years, spent battling with a stern stepfather who believed in dishing out punishment with his hands. The rebellion gets him banished and lands him on a ranch in central California with his aunt and uncle. Dial finds himself in simpler times, a time of lazy summer days spent swimming in the irrigation ditch.

As an adult, he moves on to the Navy and spends 20 years as a submariner. His years are filled with adventure, both comical and riveting. He takes the readers on a ride through exotic Japan, into the heart of a passionate love and to the edge of alcoholism and back again.

"It's about skydiving, scuba diving, atomic bomb tests and always pushing the edge of the envelope. Conversations with a Steam Pipe ... has no agenda other than entertainment. It offers no exposes or carries no political message. It is just a fun book to read, written by a common man who has led an uncommon life," Dial states.

Conversations with a Steam Pipe is Dial's first book.
