Kineto Wireless Enters Mobile over Wireless LAN Market; Major U.S. and European Operators Begin Trials of Kineto INC-5501

MILPITAS, Calif., Sept. 8, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Kineto Wireless (www.kinetowireless.com), a key innovator and leading supplier of Mobile over Wireless LAN (MoWLAN) solutions, today announced that the company has entered the MoWLAN market and unveiled its INC-5501, the key component behind its MoWLAN solution. The Kineto INC-5501 is currently in trials with major U.S. and European operators. Kineto will be demonstrating its MoWLAN solution at the GSM Association General Membership Meeting next week in Los Angeles, CA and at the CDMA Americas Congress in Miami, FL this December.

The use of mobile services within the home and office continues to increase. Recent studies indicate that more than 30% of mobile use is now indoors, and that the average subscriber uses their mobile phone for nearly 20% of their total home calling. These same studies also indicate that indoor mobile usage will accelerate when mobile quality and pricing is more comparable to that of landline service.

"Increasing mobile use in the home and office represents one of the most significant growth opportunities for service providers," said Mark Lowenstein, managing director of Mobile Ecosystem, a leading wireless consultancy that provides thought leadership for the wireless industry. "The ability to profitably deliver high-quality, low-cost indoor mobile service is the key to unlocking this opportunity. Extending mobile services over WLANs represents one important way for service providers to profitably address the quality and cost challenges."

Through the introduction of MoWLAN solutions, service providers can now exploit the discontinuities resulting from the rapid deployment of Wireless LAN technology. MoWLAN solutions enable the delivery of high-quality mobile voice and data services over WLANs located within homes, offices and hot spots at significantly lower cost than existing 2.5 and 3G mobile network technologies. As a result, subscribers can now use their mobile phone as their main communications device, and fixed and mobile service providers can maximize their revenue potential and profitability from their subscriber's use of the mobile phone as the only phone.

"For Kineto, the release of our INC-5501 is a critical milestone in our long-term strategy to extend the capabilities and benefits of Mobile over Wireless LAN to service providers and their subscribers," said John O'Connell, president and chief executive officer of Kineto Wireless. "For service providers, Kineto's solution represents an effective way to quickly differentiate service offerings for competitive advantage."

To deploy the Kineto MoWLAN solution, service providers require WLAN-enabled mobile handsets as well as the Kineto INC-5501, a new core network element. The INC-5501 connects to a core mobile network using industry standard interfaces and manages subscriber access to mobile voice and data services from various WLAN locations. The Kineto INC-5501 is a true carrier-class network element, meeting the most stringent service provider reliability, service availability and scalability requirements.

"Our INC-5501 was designed from the beginning to meet the stringent network requirements of leading global operators," said Jahangir Mohammed, founder and executive vice president, Kineto Wireless. "The innovative architecture of our INC-5501 enables service providers to deliver truly seamless mobile voice and data services."

Highlights of the Kineto INC-5501 include:

Support of all WLAN Environments: The Kineto INC-5501 addresses all major WLAN deployment scenario (home, office and hot spot locations) and supports all major WLAN technologies (802.11 and Bluetooth).

Truly Seamless Mobile Service: The Kineto INC-5501 enables mobile users to enjoy transparent access to all mobile voice and data services including SMS, MMS and IMS. In addition, the solution supports the seamless handover of active voice calls and data sessions between WLANs and outdoor mobile networks.
