Precise Biometrics' President and CEO testifies on biometrics and smart cards in the US Congress

LUND, Sweden, Sept. 09, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Precise Biometrics' (Other OTC:PBMTF) President and CEO, Christer Bergman, has been invited to testify at an oversight hearing on "Advancements in Smart Card and Biometric Technology," in the US Congress House of Representatives' Government Reform Committee's Subcommittee on Technology, Information Policy, Intergovernmental Relations and the Census. Christer Bergman will represent the biometrics and smart card industries at the hearing, which will take place today, September 9, in Washington D.C.

The purpose of the hearing is to assess the Federal government's progress in the implementation of smart card technology and to explore possibilities, such as the use of biometrics. The Subcommittee recognizes the need to explore and implement a reliable process in securing Federal buildings and computers systems, but is at the same time weighing policy implications and challenges to the use of smart cards and biometrics on a broader scale at the Federal level.

The testimony of Christer Bergman will focus on how the combination of biometrics and smart cards can provide a secure and convenient ID credential, while preserving privacy and cutting costs.

"I am honoured for the opportunity to share my view from the biometrics and smart card industry perspective with the members of the committee, to assist in their efforts to ensure physical security and computer security, without compromising on the privacy aspect, throughout the Federal government. The invitation to this hearing demonstrates Precise Biometrics' strong position on the US market," said Christer Bergman, President and CEO of Precise Biometrics.

The Subcommittee on Technology, Information Policy, Intergovernmental Relations and the Census is active in the exercise of oversight in a variety of subject areas that fall within the purview of its jurisdiction. The results of this oversight activity may produce legislative initiatives that address opportunities to improve communication, coordination, and efficiency within the Federal government, and between Federal, State and Local governments.

The oversight hearing is open to subcommittee members and the general public. Other speakers at the hearing are representatives from GAO (General Accounting Office), NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology), GSA (General Services Administration), DoD (Department of Defense) and ORC (Operational Research Consultants, Inc).
