'Math Crossword Puzzles' Equals Fun -- New book helps students learn math facts while completing fun crossword puzzles

GREENWICH, Conn., Sept. 17, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Remember when teachers would simply assign math problems straight from the textbook? For many children and parents, math is a dreaded subject, to quickly be completed and forgotten. With Anne Alcott's new book, Math Crossword Puzzles (now available through 1stBooks), students can learn these essential skills and play games at the same time.

Many students look at math as a boring subject. To counter this, Alcott has created an innovative approach to motivate children to actually have fun! Rather than completing a math problem and moving on, pupils can record their answers in a crossword puzzle grid and see how their answers match up. Alcott has included individual puzzles for the four basic operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. She also offers a section incorporating all four in the puzzles.

Alcott's book includes 50 puzzles and gives teachers, parents and children a new way to look at a difficult subject. The last section offers completed puzzles, so that teachers or parents can quickly check or grade students' work. The puzzles are geared toward third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students - a crucial time for students to develop their math skills, Alcott explains.

With Math Crossword Puzzles, students can enjoy a ground-breaking way to study and parents can rest assured that their children will finally be prepared for grueling math tests and homework assignments.

Alcott holds a doctorate in education and spent 25 years working as a teacher and administrator. Math Crossword Puzzles is her first published book. She currently resides in Greenwich, Conn.
