COSTA MESA, Calif., Sept. 29, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- The CDMA Development Group (CDG) (www.cdg.org) congratulates Verizon Wireless on the commercial launch of CDMA2000(r) 1xEV-DO. Verizon Wireless joins seven other operators in Asia and North and South America to deliver high-speed data services based on the technology.

CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is a part of the CDMA2000 family of standards, which also includes CDMA2000 1X, the leading 3G technology today, and CDMA2000 1xEV-DV. CDMA2000 1xEV-DO is an IMT-2000 3G standard, and can deliver data at speeds of up to 2.4 Mbps. It is backward compatible with cdmaOne(tm) and CDMA2000 and is a natural evolution for CDMA operators, requiring only minor upgrades to the network and small capital investment.
SK Telecom was the first operator to deploy CDMA2000 1xEV-DO in Korea in January 2002, and since then, seven additional networks have been launched by KT Freetel also in Korea, Vesper and Brasil Telecom in Brazil, PT Wireless Indonesia, APBWC in Taiwan and Monet Mobile Networks and Verizon Wireless in the United States. Four more operators including KDDI will commercially deploy their networks in 2003. There are 32 CDMA2000 1xEV-DO devices available today.
With average speeds of 300 to 600 kbps, CDMA2000 1xEV-DO enables operators to offer the most advanced multimedia services such as live broadcasts, video on demand and video telephony. The demand for these services is growing rapidly and operators are seeing as much as 11-fold increase in their data revenue as a result.
CDMA2000 dominates 3G today, with 54 million subscribers, or 98 percent of the 3G market. There are 70 commercial CDMA2000 networks, 12 more are scheduled for deployment in the second half of 2003.
