A Country's Turmoil, A Man's Dream -- New novel tells story of man who fights for freedom twice in struggling African nation

NAPERVILLE, Ill., Sept. 30, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Political turmoil in a country can change the course of thousands of people's lives. Yuri Reka, an Asian in the African country of Andaka, is one of these individuals. In author Shan Sacranie's new novel, Intensity of a Dream (now available through 1stBooks), he tells the story of a young student, who grows up amid churning political turmoil, which ultimately forces him to leave the land he loves so dearly.

An idealistic student when the Andakan Freedom Movement (AFM) takes hold, he supports this effort to gain independence from the British. Many of the people who fund the resistance are Asian and Europeans in Andaka, but their support of this movement turns out to be a detriment to them. Yuri, the son and inheritor of a textile factory owner who supported the AFM, realizes this too late.

The AFM succeeds; Dwitze Mizwe, the inspirational leader, becomes head of state. After two years, however, Mizwe, like so many others, turns into a mad political ruler, which prompts the rise of another resistance movement. The African regime of the AFM is turning against the minorities that helped them fight the British. Yuri, now owner of the factory, becomes deeply involved in the United Andakan Front (UAF), which works to overturn Mizwe.

Yuri supplies the rebels with weapons and even goes so far as to deliver them himself. Mizwe infiltrates the UAF's operation; members of the UAF suggest Yuri flee to London for his own safety.

Intensity of a Dream is a powerful story of true independence. It is the story of how one man personally felt the effects of a country in turmoil and remained loyal, even in painful exile.

Sacranie was born in Malawi, Central Africa. He earned both a master's of business administration and law degree and later worked as a senior corporate executive. Intensity of a Dream is his first book.
